Brief description

A house on a cliff harbours a secret, a funeral ends in disaster for reasons of prestige, and a major social event comes to a surprising conclusion. Intricately woven stories and poems take the reader on a journey.

14 stories; 29 poems; 20 drawings.

Blurb

A house with a secret captivates a holidaymaker (Das Haus auf der Klippe). Two respected but feuding families want to bury their patriarch at the same time (Der Wettlauf). Major cultural events take an unexpected turn (Das Neujahrskonzert and Das Gastspiel).

In these and other stories and poems, I wanted to explore the complex nature of human existence. The individual in constant conflict between self-assertion and the necessary adaptation. An eternal struggle with hopes and fears, victories and defeats, often comical, not infrequently tragic. Laughter and tears are close together.

And why do humans allow themselves to be drawn into wars time and again?

Hans-Peter Lauenroth

Illustrating stories and poems with a pen in just one picture is a very appealing task. Getting to the heart of the matter, opening up additional spaces for the imagination – that was the challenge I wanted to take on.

The stories and poems in this book are multi-layered and profound, conjuring up images as you read them. In some of my drawings, I have visualised this multi-layered nature as a summary, while in others I have taken it further in pictorial terms.

Brief description

An ‘Amour Fou’ and a dark secret – and what role does Hamburg’s Alster play in all this?

Blurb

Autumn is just around the corner, and so is the autumn of her life, now that she has turned fifty?
And now this meteorite strike! A young man, a very young man, an enchanted afternoon, a beguiling night, without a trace of reason, without a thought for tomorrow.
Is this the end of her loneliness?
She has lived alone for a long time, and her work as a piano teacher has only intensified her loneliness. Her evening walks along the Alster always gave her strength, but lately they have also caused her increasing inner turmoil. There was this flickering light on the opposite bank.
And she was also feeling increasingly unsettled at the piano. Her grandfather, a well-known pianist, had whispered to her on his deathbed:
‘Only in the autumn of your life will you discover the deep secret of the black keys.’
